1988 Toyota LJ70 Land Cruiser, Turbo Diesel
This 1988 Toyota LJ70 came to us as a rare find, a factory left-hand drive example powered by the 2L-T 2.4L inline-four turbo diesel and paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. The odometer showed 154,000 kilometers, roughly 95,000 miles, at the time of sale.
The LJ70 is part of Toyota’s 70 Series lineup, produced from 1984 through the early 1990s and built on the same rugged platform as the beloved FJ40. While most LJ70s were sold as right-hand drive in Japan, Australia, and other export markets, factory LHD examples are considerably harder to come by, which made this truck stand out the moment it arrived at our shop.
Under the hood, the 2L-T turbo diesel is known for its simplicity, durability, and fuel efficiency, traits that have earned the 70 Series a reputation as one of the most capable and long-lived four-wheel-drive platforms ever built. Combined with the manual gearbox and compact wheelbase, the LJ70 delivers a driving experience that’s become increasingly rare in today’s SUV market.
This particular LJ70 was imported and sold as a clean, unmolested example, ideal for a collector or enthusiast looking for an original factory-spec diesel 70 Series without the need for a full restoration. It has since found a new home.
