Restored Toyota 80 Series Land Cruiser by Land Cruiser Restorations

FJ80 Toyota Land Cruiser Restoration, Repair & Sales

Ask any serious overlander what they’d take to the end of the earth and there’s a good chance they’ll say an 80 Series Land Cruiser. Produced from 1991 to 1997 in the US, the 80 Series is where Toyota got serious about combining genuine off-road capability with real-world comfort, and the results speak for themselves. These trucks have one of the most passionate and dedicated followings of any vehicle ever made.

The Engines

Early 80 Series trucks, the 1991 and 1992 FJ80, came with the 3F-E, a 4.0L inline-6 and a direct descendant of the same F-series engines that powered Land Cruisers for decades. Tough and reliable, but on the lighter side of power at 155hp.

In 1993 Toyota upgraded to the 1FZ-FE, a 4.5L inline-6 producing 212hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. Smoother, more powerful, and the engine that most 80 Series enthusiasts seek out. If you’re looking for an 80 Series, the 1993-1997 FZJ80 with the 1FZ-FE is the one.

The Lockers

This is where the 80 Series changed everything. Starting in 1993, Toyota offered factory front and rear locking differentials as an option, a massive upgrade over the 60 Series and a game changer for serious off-road capability. A triple-locked FZJ80 is considered the holy grail of the 80 Series world, and for good reason. If yours has them, that’s a serious asset. If it doesn’t, we can talk options.

We Build to Suit

80 Series owners are a different breed. These trucks get used, really used. Trail runs, overland trips, and weekend adventures. So the builds we do on 80 Series trucks tend to reflect that. Upgraded bumpers, lift kits, new wheels and tires, skid plates, the accessory options for these trucks are nearly endless and we can help you spec exactly what you need for how you actually drive.

Of course body, paint, and interior work are part of the picture too. These trucks are getting older and they show it. We handle everything from full paint restoration to interior refreshes, carpet, upholstery, trim, so your 80 Series looks as capable as it is.

Not every 80 Series needs everything. Not every budget is the same. We work with you to build exactly what your Cruiser needs, nothing more, nothing less.

Frequently Asked Questions

What years were the 80 Series produced in the US?

The 80 Series Land Cruiser was produced from 1991 to 1997 in the US market. Early models (1991-1992) are designated FJ80 with the 3F-E engine, while 1993-1997 models are FZJ80 with the upgraded 1FZ-FE engine.

What’s the difference between the FJ80 and FZJ80?

The FJ80 (1991-1992) came with the 3F-E 4.0L inline-six producing 155hp. The FZJ80 (1993-1997) features the upgraded 1FZ-FE 4.5L inline-six with 212hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. Most enthusiasts seek out the FZJ80 for its stronger power and refinement.

What are factory lockers and why do they matter?

Starting in 1993, Toyota offered factory front and rear locking differentials as an option on the 80 Series. Lockers dramatically improve off-road traction in challenging terrain. A “triple-locked” FZJ80 (with front, center, and rear lockers) is considered the gold standard of the 80 Series world.

Can you add lockers to an 80 Series that didn’t come with them?

Yes, we can install aftermarket lockers on 80 Series Land Cruisers that didn’t come with factory lockers. We’ll walk you through the options and recommend what makes sense for how you use your truck.

Do you build 80 Series Cruisers for overland use?

Absolutely. Overland and expedition builds are one of our specialties for the 80 Series. We handle everything from bumpers, lift kits, skid plates, wheels, and tires to auxiliary fuel, roof racks, and interior storage solutions.

Do you work with out-of-state 80 Series customers?

Yes, we serve clients nationwide and offer free shipping both directions. Your 80 Series comes to our Belle Plaine, Kansas shop, and we deliver it back to your door when the build is complete.
