Known around our shop as Houston, this 1988 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ62 is a completed custom V8 restomod built on an exceptionally clean, rust-free Texas chassis.
Houston is powered by a Chevrolet 5.3L Vortec V8 paired with a 6L80E six-speed automatic transmission, giving this classic FJ62 the power and highway drivability of a much more modern vehicle. The restoration is finished in Desert Tan with a custom brown interior, black wheels, BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires, custom bumpers and rock sliders, and a full-length roof rack.
The goal was simple: preserve the unmistakable character of the 60 Series while creating a restored Toyota Land Cruiser that is comfortable and capable enough to be driven regularly.

Rust-Free Texas Foundation
Houston spent its life in Texas, providing us with an unusually clean, rust-free FJ62 to build from. Starting with a solid frame and body allowed our team to focus on the restoration and custom upgrades rather than extensive corrosion repair.
The chassis and undercarriage were cleaned and treated for additional protection, preserving the strong foundation beneath this completed build.
5.3L Vortec V8 & 6L80E Automatic
Houston’s original drivetrain was replaced with a Chevrolet 5.3L Vortec V8 and 6L80E six-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain had approximately 73,000 miles when sourced for the conversion.
This combination provides substantially more power than the original FJ62 drivetrain, along with smooth automatic shifts and dual overdrive gears for more relaxed highway cruising. It’s a proven setup that makes this classic Land Cruiser much easier to enjoy in modern traffic and on long-distance trips.
Desert Tan Exterior & Custom Upgrades
Houston received a complete repaint in Desert Tan, paired with black exterior components that give the truck a clean, purposeful appearance.
Custom front and rear bumpers, rock sliders, a full-length roof rack, black wheels, and BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A tires add functionality while complementing the original lines of the FJ62.
Rather than dramatically changing the truck’s appearance, the custom work was designed around the classic proportions and styling that make the 60 Series immediately recognizable.
Custom Brown Interior
The interior was completely refreshed in a rich brown finish that complements the Desert Tan exterior.
Custom upholstered seats are paired with coordinating door panels, carpeting, trim, and a finished rear cargo area. JL Audio speakers have been integrated into the doors and rear panels for upgraded sound while maintaining a clean installation.
The result is a more comfortable and refined cabin that still feels appropriate inside a classic Toyota Land Cruiser.
A Classic Land Cruiser Built to Be Driven
Houston represents the type of FJ62 restomod we like to build: classic where it should be and modern where it makes the truck better to own.
The V8 and six-speed automatic improve performance and highway usability, while the restored interior, suspension, tires, custom fabrication, and other upgrades make the truck more practical for regular driving and long-distance touring.
It still looks unmistakably like a 1988 FJ62, it simply drives like a much more capable version of one.
