FJ70 Series History
Introduced in 1984, the J70 came in a wide range of configurations including soft-top, hard-top, FRP top, utility, cab-chassis, and Troop Carrier with inward facing rear seats. Early models featured a 4.0L 3F petrol engine. A lighter duty version used the 22R 2.4L gasoline engine and 2L diesel engines also found in the Toyota Hilux. This variant was sold in some markets as the Bundera or Landcruiser II, later evolving into the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. The J70 was also notable for introducing the first automatic transmission in a four-wheel drive Japanese vehicle.
Engine and drivetrain updates continued through the decades. In 1990 new generation diesel options arrived including a 3.4L five-cylinder and a 4.2L six-cylinder naturally aspirated motor. A 24-valve 4.5L six-cylinder 1FZ-FE petrol engine followed in 1993. Toyota overhauled the suspension in 1999, adding coil springs to the solid front axle and lengthening the rear leaf springs for improved ride comfort and wheel travel. Long wheelbase models were redesignated the 78 series Troop Carrier and 79 series pickup.
In 2002 Australia received the HDJ79 with a 4.2L turbodiesel EFI engine. Toyota introduced its first turbo diesel V8, the 1VD-FTV, to the 70 series in 2007 along with a new 4-door mid-wheelbase 76 series model. The 79 Double Cab pickup arrived in 2012 for South Africa and Australia. A limited 30th Anniversary edition was sold in Japan in 2014 and 2015 as a wagon and pickup with a 1GR-FE V6 petrol engine.
The 70 series remains in production today, still sold in Australia, Africa, and Latin America in wagon, Troop Carrier, and cab-chassis configurations.
