HDJ80 Turbo Diesel Land Cruiser | 80 Series Restoration & Sales

The HDJ80 is the holy grail of the 80 Series Land Cruiser world, and one of the most sought-after diesel Toyotas ever built. Produced from 1990 to 1997, the HDJ80 paired the legendary 1HDT 4.2L inline-six turbo diesel with full-time four-wheel drive, coil springs front and rear, and on many trucks, factory triple locking differentials. It is the rig that built the Land Cruiser’s reputation across the rest of the world, and because it was never officially sold in the United States, finding one stateside is rare.

We restore, sell, and build HDJ80s here at Land Cruiser Restorations, and we know these trucks inside and out.

Why HDJ80s Are So Desirable

The 1HDT engine is the headline. It is a direct-injection 4.2L turbo diesel known for torque, fuel efficiency, and a service life measured in hundreds of thousands of miles. Paired with the H55F five-speed manual transmission, it is one of the most durable drivetrains Toyota ever assembled. Most HDJ80s came with full-time 4WD, and the higher-trim trucks added factory front, center, and rear locking differentials, which is a setup almost nothing else of that era can match.

Add in the 80 Series body, three rows of seating, coil sprung ride, and proper off-road geometry, and you have a vehicle that drives well, hauls a family, and goes anywhere. That combination is why HDJ80 values keep climbing year over year.

What We Do With HDJ80s

Because the HDJ80 was a global-market vehicle, almost every truck we work on was imported into the United States. We do not help with titling or import logistics, so clients bring us trucks that already have clean U.S. titles in hand. From there, we handle everything else.

Our HDJ80 work typically includes:

  • Full mechanical service on the 1HDT, including injectors, glow plugs, timing, and cooling
  • Body and paint, going to bare metal where rust dictates and refinishing in factory or custom colors
  • Interior restoration, from original cloth to premium leather setups
  • Suspension and brake refreshes
  • Custom bumpers, lighting, sound, and overland or daily-driver upgrades
  • Left-hand drive and right-hand drive trucks both welcome, we work on either

We do not do frame-off restorations, but we do everything else, from a clean cosmetic refresh to a comprehensive bumper-to-bumper build.

HDJ80 Parts and Sourcing

HDJ80 parts are noticeably harder to source than parts for U.S.-market 80 Series trucks, but we have established supplier relationships specifically for these rigs and know where to go for everything from 1HDT engine components to interior trim. Clients do not need to track down their own parts. We handle sourcing as part of the build.

Build Timelines and Budget

HDJ80 projects typically run six to fifteen months depending on our current shop workload and the depth of the build. A focused cosmetic and mechanical refresh moves faster, a comprehensive build with full bodywork, paint, interior, and custom fabrication takes longer.

We work within client budgets. Tell us what you want to spend and what matters most to you, and we will build a scope that fits. We are upfront about what is possible at each level, and we do not surprise clients with cost creep mid-build.

All builds include free two-way nationwide shipping, so wherever you are in the country, we will get your truck to Kansas and back to you when it is finished.

This 1990 HDJ80 came through our shop and is a good example of what an HDJ80 build looks like in our hands. Midnight Black two-stage paint, the 1HDT turbo diesel with 149,000 miles, H55F five-speed, left-hand drive, factory locking differentials, custom front and rear bumpers, and high-output LED headlights. The truck retained its rare factory third-row fold-down jump seats and push-button differential lockers.
