What Engine Powers the 80 Series Land Cruiser?

The Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series was produced from 1990 to 1997 and offered a range of engines depending on the market. These included both gasoline and diesel options, all known for durability and long-distance capability.

Gasoline Engines

3F-E – 4.0L inline-6

  • Used in early 80 Series models (1990 to 1992)
  • Offered primarily in markets like Australia and North America
  • Fuel-injected and reliable, but not fuel-efficient

1FZ-FE – 4.5L inline-6

  • Introduced around 1993
  • Replaced the 3F-E in most markets, including the U.S.
  • Produced more power and torque
  • Known for smooth operation and long-term reliability

Diesel Engines

1HZ – 4.2L naturally aspirated inline-6 diesel

  • Common in global markets
  • Extremely durable and favored in expedition vehicles
  • Not turbocharged, but simple and easy to maintain

1HD-T – 4.2L turbocharged inline-6 diesel

  • Introduced in the early 1990s
  • Offered more power than the 1HZ
  • Used in HDJ80 models (not sold in the U.S.)

1HD-FT – 4.2L 24-valve turbocharged inline-6 diesel

  • Improved version of the 1HD-T
  • Available in late-model HDJ80s
  • Regarded as one of the best diesel engines Toyota produced
