What Engine Is Used in the LC80 Land Cruiser?

The Toyota Land Cruiser LC80, produced from 1990 to 1997, offered a range of petrol and diesel engines depending on the market. These engines were chosen for their durability, off‑road performance, and suitability for both rugged and urban use.

Petrol Engines

  • 3F‑E – 4.0‑liter inline‑six, fuel‑injected, producing about 155 hp. Used in early models for certain markets, including the U.S. from 1991 to 1992.
  • 1FZ‑FE – 4.5‑liter inline‑six, fuel‑injected, producing about 212 hp. Replaced the 3F‑E in many markets from 1993 onward, including the U.S.

Diesel Engines

  • 1HZ – 4.2‑liter naturally aspirated inline‑six diesel, known for extreme longevity and ease of maintenance.
  • 1HD‑T – 4.2‑liter turbocharged inline‑six diesel, producing about 165 hp, offering excellent torque for off‑road and towing.
  • 1HD‑FT – 4.2‑liter 24‑valve turbocharged inline‑six diesel, producing around 168 hp, available in later years in select markets.

Market Variations

  • United States – Only offered with petrol engines, 3F‑E (1991 to 1992) and 1FZ‑FE (1993 to 1997).
