What Engine Came in the FJ40 Land Cruiser?

The Toyota FJ40 is one of the most iconic off-road vehicles in automotive history. Produced from the early 1960s through the 1980s, it featured some engine options, most of them part of Toyota’s durable F-series engine family.

Primary Engine Options

F Engine (3.9L Inline-6)

  • Used in early FJ40 models, mainly from the 1960s through the mid-1970s
  • Produced around 125 horsepower and strong low-end torque
  • Known for simplicity and long-term reliability

2F Engine (4.2L Inline-6)

  • Introduced in the mid-1970s and used through the end of U.S. production in 1983
  • Produced about 135 to 155 horsepower, depending on the year and tuning
  • Offered smoother performance and improved torque over the F engine

Other Regional Variants

  • Some non-U.S. markets saw diesel-powered BJ40 variants using the 3B diesel or other B-series engines
  • Yet, these were not considered part of the official FJ40 lineup
