What Cars Come With a Sub Tank?

A sub tank is an auxiliary fuel tank designed to extend a vehicle’s driving range, especially in environments where refueling stations are scarce. While sub tanks are not common in most everyday passenger cars, they are widely used in 4x4s, overlanding vehicles, and certain commercial trucks.

Vehicles Commonly Equipped With Sub Tanks

Toyota Land Cruiser Series

• Models such as the 80, 100, 200, and 70 Series (in select markets) often come factory-equipped with sub tanks.
• Some Prado models also offer an auxiliary tank option.

Nissan Patrol

• Patrol Y60, Y61, and Y62 series have versions with dual fuel tanks, especially in markets like Australia and the Middle East.

Toyota Hilux & Hilux Surf

• Certain diesel-powered export models have optional sub tanks for remote-area use.

Ford Ranger & Mazda BT-50 (aftermarket)

• Available with dealer-installed or aftermarket sub tanks in off-road touring setups.

Overland & Expedition Trucks

• Heavy-duty models like the Toyota Troop Carrier, Mercedes-Benz G-Class Professional, and Unimog may have sub tanks for extended missions.

Why Sub Tanks Are Useful

• Extended Range – Perfect for crossing deserts, rural outback, or remote mountain trails.
• Balanced Weight Distribution – Mounted low and at the rear for stability.
• Fuel Management – Allows carrying different fuel types if needed (petrol/diesel separation in some builds).

Most sub tanks are market-specific, for example, Australian and African-spec Land Cruisers often have them as standard, while U.S. models rarely do.
