How Does the Sub Tank Work on a Land Cruiser?

Some Toyota Land Cruiser models are equipped with a sub-tank, an auxiliary fuel tank. This feature provides extra fuel capacity, extending the vehicle’s driving range and making it better suited for remote travel and off‑road expeditions.

Purpose of the Sub Tank

  • Extended Range – Allows longer distances between refueling stops.
  • Backup Fuel – Acts as a reserve if the main tank runs low in isolated areas.
  • Expedition and Utility Use – Especially valuable in regions with sparse fuel stations.

How It Works

  • Fuel Storage – The sub tank is a separate fuel reservoir located elsewhere on the vehicle, usually under the body or in the rear section.
  • Fuel Transfer – The engine always draws from the main tank. When it gets low, the driver activates a switch on the dashboard to transfer fuel from the sub tank to the main tank.
  • Transfer Pump – An electric pump moves the fuel, and some models have a gauge or indicator light to show the sub tank’s fuel level.
  • Control System – Depending on the model, the system may prevent transfer unless the main tank has space, helping avoid overfilling.
