What Is the Toyota Land Cruiser Gas Sub Tank?

The gas sub-tank in a Toyota Land Cruiser is an auxiliary fuel tank that works alongside the main fuel tank to increase total fuel capacity. It is designed for drivers who travel long distances or venture into remote areas where fuel stations are scarce.

Purpose of the Sub Tank

  • Extended Range – Allows the vehicle to travel much farther between refueling stops.
  • Backup Supply – Acts as a reserve if the main tank runs low in isolated locations.
  • Off‑Road and Expedition Use – Perfect for overlanding, desert crossings, and rural work environments.

How It Works

  • Fuel Storage – The sub-tank is a separate fuel reservoir located under the vehicle or in the rear section.
  • Fuel Transfer – The engine always draws fuel from the main tank. When the main tank gets low, the driver activates a dashboard switch to transfer fuel from the sub tank.
  • Pump System – An electric pump moves fuel from the sub tank to the main tank.
  • Indicators – Some models have a separate fuel gauge or a warning light for the sub-tank.

Models That Commonly Have a Gas Sub Tank

  • 70 Series – Especially in Australia, Africa, and the Middle East.
  • 80 Series – Certain non‑U.S. configurations.
  • 100/105 Series – Offered in some diesel and utility versions.
